Yaquina Bay Lighthouse

Yaquina Bay Lighthouse

This project involved the complete above-ground exterior restoration of the historic Yaquina Bay Lighthouse in Newport, Oregon.

ABOUT THIS PROJECT

This project involved the complete above-ground exterior restoration of the historic Yaquina Bay Lighthouse in Newport, Oregon. A local and national treasure, the lighthouse is the last remaining wooden lighthouse in the State of Oregon; the oldest building in Newport; and the only lighthouse with attached living quarters. The building was constructed in 1871 with the purpose of guiding ships entering the Yaquina River during a period of exponential growth in the maritime and fishing industries of the area. The historically significant structure was decommissioned in 1874 due to the construction of the Yaquina Head Lighthouse. The building narrowly avoided demolition via the support of local townspeople and the Friends of Yaquina Lighthouses organization. Though the lighthouse was officially restored as a privately maintained aid to navigation in December of 1996, financial upkeep of the building remained a challenge and the structure was eventually shuttered and suffered years of neglect. Extensive rot and crumbling brick required the building to remain closed to the public and wrapped in plastic. The lighthouse was eventually added to the National Register of Historic Places and became a strong tourist draw for the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department (OPRD). Working under the OPRD, Pacific Tech Construction had the honor of breathing new life into the historic light, which sits 161 feet above sea level; repairs to the light required extensive phasing and safety planning during its removal, repair, and reinstatement. Pacific Tech also performed historically correct repairs to the building envelope, which included restoration to the roof, windows, doors, chimneys, brick foundation, lanterns and siding. The project required custom-made and custom-fabricated features specific to the unique facets of the building architecture and systems. Repairs to the roof framing, chimneys, brickwork, lighthouse lantern, and architectural features required a deep knowledge and mastery of historic building techniques and craftsmanship.
