ASSEMBLY FACILITY BLDG 103 ROOF REPLACEMENT

ABOUT THIS PROJECT

This project involves the removal of the existing modified bitumen roofing system at the Assembly Facility in NASA’s Building 103 Michoud in New Orleans, LA. For this project, Pacific Tech draws upon its robust in-house roofing department, with additional support from our network of 3,000+ vetted subcontractors when needed.

All concrete roof deck panels are stripped down to the existing timber or steel purlins. The existing roofing system is then methodically assessed and replaced with a new 3” metal roof deck and SBS Modified Bitumen Roofing System, with a spray-on rubber roof coating.

The project also includes replacing the existing damaged timber purlins as needed with new steel purlins. Inspection of the remaining purlins is ongoing, and replacement as required is based on a condition assessment that is performed by our roofing team and then approved by the USACE team. Pacific Tech anticipated that a minimum of 40 additional purlins would need to be replaced beyond those that were indicated on the original plans.

Pacific Tech provides a full-time inspection by a certified Registered Roof Observer (RRO) for all surface preparation and roofing application activities on the site, including documentation of deteriorated timber purlins during demolition, as well as subsequent repairs prior to closing/covering. The USACE Contracting Officer is notified when/if deficiencies are identified outside/beyond construction limits that could impact the roof work area’s watertight integrity.

Meticulous documentation and clear, continuous communication is especially crucial as Pacific Tech is completing this delicate work above an occupied, operational space in which sensitive NASA/Spaceforce activities require a carefully controlled environment in order to protect the high-security areas and precision work within.
